Our Cluny Heritage

Most famous of all the monastic founders and the author of the Rule which eventually superseded others in Western Europe and influenced all later rules, was St. Benedict of Nursia (480 543 AD). St. Benedict, originally a hermit and subsequently in association with other Hermits, who sought his guidance, founded a community of monks at Montecassino in Southern Italy in 529 AD and gave a definite rule of life.

The rule had immediate and universal appeal in Western Europe and within the space of a Century, hundreds of Benedictine houses, each following the same routine, were scattered throughout the Western Empire. The monks in these houses raised the standard of all aspects of life. Knowledge gained, combined with experimentation and above all with an orderly and steady regimen of work, made of these monasteries models for the
Neighborhood.

The Abbey of Cluny: This was a Benedictine Monastery in Burgandy, France, founded in 910 AD Such was the fame of this monastery for its integrity and religious spirit that by the year 1100 over 300 Benedictine Monasteries all over Europe had placed themselves under its guidance, forming the Congregation of Cluny, within the Benedictine order. The Abbots who governed Cluny during the first 259 years of its existence were all remarkable scholars. Cluny was regarded as second to Rome in the Christian World. The Spirit of Cluny inspired the greatest of the reforming Popes, Gregory VII (Hildeband) who applied to the Church as a whole the lessons which Cluny had taught him.

Anne Marie Javouhey: At the beginning of the history of our Religious family is written the destiny of a young Burgundian woman, Anne Marie Javouhey. She was born in Jallanges, (Cote d' Or), France on 10th November 1779. On 12th May 1807 in the Church of Saint Pierre at Chalon, Anne Marie and her three sisters and five other young women bound themselves by the vows of religion and chose St. Joseph as Patron. In 1812 the Recollets Convent was bought in Cluny, close to the famous Benedictine Monastery and from then on our Congregation got the name Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny.

Our link with the Abbey of Cluny places our roots in the 5th Century AD and highlights important concepts in true education the combination of Greek learning and asceticism with the Roman preference for love of law and order.
